Introduction

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is set to launch a ₹200 crore venture capital fund, named the ‘IITM Alumni Fund’, to support early-stage startups, with a strong focus on deeptech ventures. The initiative was announced during Sangam 2025, the institute’s annual alumni event held recently in Bengaluru.

The fund will operate as a professionally managed, independent legal entity and will follow standard venture capital practices. It will target startups that are in the pre-Series A to Series A stages, especially those incubated within IIT Madras’ startup ecosystem. The fund’s corpus is expected to come primarily from alumni and high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) affiliated with the institute.

Strategic Focus & Investment Scope

The ₹200 crore IITM Alumni Fund will primarily invest in early-stage deeptech startups, focusing on ventures at the pre-Series A and Series A stages. Its core aim is to support startups incubated at IIT Madras, particularly those tackling complex engineering or scientific problems. The fund targets sectors like AI, robotics, semiconductors, defense tech, clean energy, and healthtech. It aligns with IITM’s broader Startup Shatam vision—to incubate 100 deeptech startups annually—and aims to bridge the funding gap often faced by high-tech innovations at early stages.

Fund Structure & Governance

The IITM Alumni Fund is structured as an independent legal entity, separate from IIT Madras, ensuring autonomy in operations. It will follow standard venture capital (VC) governance practices, including rigorous due diligence, professional fund management, and a transparent investment process. The fund is to be overseen by a team of experienced investors, alumni, and domain experts, ensuring strategic alignment with deeptech goals while maintaining investor confidence. Although IIT Madras facilitates the ecosystem, it does not directly control the fund’s investment decisions, ensuring clear separation between academia and capital deployment.

Funding & Alumni Engagement

The ₹200 crore fund is primarily backed by IIT Madras alumni and select high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) with a connection to the institute. At Sangam 2025, Director Prof. V. Kamakoti urged alumni to “give back” by investing in the fund, positioning it as both a philanthropic and strategic opportunity. The initiative emphasizes engaged capital—where alumni not only fund startups but also mentor and support them. The fund seeks to deepen the alumni-startup ecosystem link, making alumni key stakeholders in nurturing the next generation of deeptech ventures emerging from IITM.

IITM Incubation Legacy

The IIT Madras Incubation Cell has built a strong legacy, having supported over 500 startups across deeptech, AI, healthtech, and clean energy sectors. These startups collectively have a valuation exceeding ₹50,000 crore and have generated over 11,000 jobs. The ecosystem has produced successful ventures like Ather Energy (now public) and Uniphore (AI unicorn). The Incubation Cell is recognized for providing not just funding but also mentorship, lab access, and industry partnerships, making it one of India’s most impactful academic startup hubs. The new ₹200 Cr fund aims to amplify this success further.

Notable Startups Showcased at Sangam

At Sangam 2025, three standout deeptech startups from IIT Madras were showcased:

  • Folium Sensing — Develops fiber-optic monitoring systems for real-time infrastructure health and safety, aiding critical sectors like railways and energy.
  • Q-axis Motors — Creates precision gimbals and motor systems for defense, drones, and surveillance applications, enhancing stability and control.
  • Zentor Medtech — Innovates solid-state laser technology for advanced eye surgeries, offering safer and more precise treatment options.

Conclusion

The IITM Alumni Fund marks a bold step in strengthening India’s deeptech startup ecosystem. By leveraging the strong legacy of IIT Madras’ incubation platform and deep alumni engagement, the ₹200 crore fund aims to bridge early-stage funding gaps and accelerate the growth of high-impact technologies. With a structured, professional approach and strategic alignment with the Startup Shatam mission, the fund positions IIT Madras as a national leader in academic-driven innovation and entrepreneurship.
