Saagnik Mukherjee and his wife Madhumita started a food delivery business from their home in 2020. Their focus was on serving delicious home-cooked food. But, Saagnik felt uncomfortable using plastic containers to pack food. Being an automobile engineer, he knew how harmful plastic is to the environment. This concern prompted him to look for alternatives to plastic. He discovered a company in Ghaziabad that made strong paper containers. He felt that this could be a better alternative to plastic. With this inspiration, he closed his food business and started a trading company called ‘Eco Care’. In this, he used to sell paper-based food packaging products. However, this venture closed in 2022.

The foundation of the company was laid with a friend

After the closure of ‘Eco Care’, Saagnik Mukherjee along with his friend and fellow automobile engineer Sanjoy Banerjee co-founded Pepcom India Pvt Ltd in 2022. Both had similar concerns about plastic waste. They decided to set up a unit to make recyclable paper bowls. He invested ₹1.5 crore in this new business. Of this, ₹50 lakh came from his own pocket. The rest was received through a bank loan under the ‘Stand-Up India’ scheme. Well-known brands among customers

Pepcom India now produces 3.5 million biodegradable containers every month, made from recycled and compostable paper. The company has already replaced nearly 7 million plastic containers – equivalent to about 300 tonnes of plastic. Sagnik Mukherjee’s company’s containers are leak-proof, non-toxic and food safe. They can also be branded as per the customer’s choice. Using FDA-approved paperboard from ITC, their containers are designed for both hot and cold items. The company serves over 100 customers in 15 cities through 20-25 distributors. These include popular brands like Wow Momo, Biryani by Kilo and Travel Food Services.

Production of 50 thousand containers every day

Currently, Pepcom offers containers in nine different sizes. Their capacity ranges from 200ml to 1250ml. The 8000 sq. ft. factory uses three machines to produce 50,000 containers daily. In the future, Sagnik Mukherjee’s company plans to launch more products like large bowls, burger boxes and roll boxes.
